The answer arrives in seconds, well-reasoned, with cited sources—though not always verified. The reader is satisfied, but the media outlet never knows that this reader even existed.

This is the scenario described—with data—in the digital trends report that Comscore presented for Latin America in early 2026. Artificial intelligence, social media, and the proliferation of screens already determine what news content each user sees, and media outlets in the region are increasingly dependent on a decision over which they have no control.

Leónidas Rojas, Comscore’s commercial director for South America, sums it up this way: “AI is beginning to function as a new gateway to digital discovery.” This is the assessment of the company itself—the one that measured the phenomenon—not that of an outside analyst.

We've been through this before, in a different context

Less than a year ago, artificial intelligence had already changed the process of positioning a brand online. Positioning authentic content—the kind that a traditional search engine could find and prioritize—became more difficult with each passing month. It was only a matter of time before the same mechanism would extend to news: artificial intelligence generates the answer and eliminates the click that, until now, measured how audiences arrived at a site, whether it was a brand site or a news site.

Comscore quantifies that shift. Voice assistants and search engines that generate direct answers They are already drawing traffic that used to go to news sites, and competing to be cited in that response carries as much weight as ranking content on a traditional search engine. The click—the metric that sustained the digital press’s business model for twenty years—is no longer the only indicator that matters.

The report gives this gray area a specific name: “potential AI audience.” It includes users who view content or references within a generated response, even if they never click on the source link. The medium's theoretical reach is growing, but control over that audience is diminishing: No one visits the site, no one sees the ads, and no one leaves a trace that the media outlet can monetize.

Being visible does not mean being trustworthy

The decision about which source appears to the user is no longer made by the media outlet; it is made by the system that generates the response. The report warns that these responses often prioritize platforms like YouTube over traditional news outlets, even on topics that those outlets covered first. The brand that spent years building its reputation is now competing against a format, not against another media outlet.

Comscore’s analysis falls short on an even more critical point. The same artificial intelligence that generates the responses does not currently filter out the enormous amount of fake news circulating on the internet. Legitimate media outlets are grappling with how to adapt to an environment they cannot control, and that very technical limitation leaves the door open for false content to fill the space that verified content cannot hold. Fighting for visibility isn’t enough. We must also fight against what is already occupying that space without having undergone any editorial scrutiny.

Land is becoming increasingly fragmented

Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina remain the markets with the highest volume of news consumption in the region. But that volume no longer comes through a single channel. Social media amplifies the reach of news, and a significant portion of the audience consumes news content without ever leaving those platforms. Video is gaining prominence, connected TV adds another consumption channel, and content creators—not traditional media outlets—are capturing a large share of these interactions.

Three tasks that the media doesn't choose

The analysis identifies three specific tasks for publishers and communications professionals. The first is to adapt content to environments where an AI system can quote, summarize, or reinterpret it. The second is to identify which platforms serve as key intermediaries for visibility. The third—and most difficult—is to uncover new consumption habits and new metrics that measure more than just direct traffic, because much of the impact already occurs where the user never actually clicks.

The gateway that the media built over decades is still there, but it’s no longer the only one—or even the main one. Readers who ask their AI assistant, “What happened today?” still get an answer—though not necessarily the best one, and not necessarily a verified one. This has already happened to any brand competing for a foothold on the web. Now it’s the news’s turn, and this time the cost of losing that position isn’t measured solely in traffic: it’s measured by how easy it is to replace the truth with something that merely resembles it.

Sources: Luca de Tena Journalism Lab — “Latin America Heads into 2026 with a New Battle for News Visibility”; IAB Peru — “Comscore Reveals the Trends That Will Shape the Latin American Digital Ecosystem in 2026”; based on data from the report Comscore — Digital Trends, Latin America Edition 2025–2026.

AI Already Determines What News Latin America Sees, According to Comscore: An Analysis of Visibility, Misinformation, and the End of the Click as a Metric.

[10

post-2840","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-analisis","infinite-scroll-item","no-featured-image-padding
["GET
